You're probably thinking, "Why should I go Greek?"
There are many benefits to joining a Greek organization. Socially, sororities offer their members lots of ways to meet people on campus and socialize with members of other Greek organizations. And while we do enjoy parties and socials, membership in a sorority offers many more opportunities personally, academically and professionally. Joining the Greek community can be a great way to find other people who share your interests, as well as become involved or find leadership positions on campus. Greek organizations provide the opportunity to participate in regular service events, which have many aims, but they always focus on building campus community while benefiting worthy organizations. Further, joining a Greek organization offers many opportunities for professional development, from networking to having older members to serve as mentors. Columbia sorority women have held a wide rage of internships, an asset that will give you new perspectives on old interests or perhaps even spark some new ones. Beyond these networking opportunities, holding an office in a sorority strengthens your time-management skills, gives you practice balancing responsibilities, and builds your management abilities – not to mention builds your resume.

Perhaps most of all, Greek organizations give you the benefits of forming enduring friendships with other Greek members. Columbia University is a large community in itself, and when you factor in living in New York City, life at CU can admittedly become a little intimidating. Becoming a part of Greek life allows you to have a smaller, more close-knit community within these larger ones. This way, not only can you develop strong bonds with your sisters, but with members of the greater Greek community, as well.

Joining a sorority can only enhance your college experience. Here at Theta, one of our mottos is “You Only Live Once”. Give Greek life a shot, and even if you decide that it isn’t for you, you’ll never regret being open-minded. At the very least, you’re sure to meet some great girls along the way!
