Theta sisters take part in many service and philanthropy events each term. In the past, we’ve volunteered as a sorority at Columbia Community Outreach, danced the night away at CU Dance Marathon, hosted a halloween party for Morningside Heights children in Riverside Park, and took part in mentoring events with Step Up Women’s Network. The events we do change every semester, too, depending on what members want to get involved in, so there’s never a dull moment.

It’s also great to have the support of the entire Theta sisterhood if you are planning an event yourself—like when Raffi put on a screening of the film “Invisible Children” or when Holly wanted to send care packages to the troops. We throw our support behind our members’ interests, clubs, and activities, especially when they’re for a good cause.

Theta’s National Philanthropy: C.A.S.A.
Our “national philanthropy,” which is just a fancy name for an organization that is officially supported by every Theta chapter world-wide, is Court Appointed Special Advocates. C.A.S.A. is a unique organization that trains volunteers (or “advocates”) to speak on behalf of children involved in court proceedings. They provide valuable advisory information to judges and juries, and very often also become trusted friends, mentors, and advisers, lending children the support they need during what can be a process filled with stress and uncertainty.

The C.A.S.A. program consists of more than 900 local programs and 46 state organizations. Over 59,000 C.A.S.A. volunteers have helped, guided, and mentored an estimated 243,000 children nationwide.

Annual Philanthropy Events:
Theta’s philanthropy events, each held once per academic year, are open to the entire campus and have to date raised thousands of dollars for C.A.S.A. They are meant to foster a sense of both Greek and campus-wide community while promoting the cause of and raising money for our national philanthropy.

Mr. Fraternity:
Held every spring, this less-than-traditional beauty pageant features one contestant representing each on-campus fraternity competing against each other in categories like Talent, Beach Wear, Formal Wear, and Interview. All ticket proceeds and individual donations earned by each fraternity contestant is donated straight to C.A.S.A.

Breakfast at our C.A.S.A:
Held every fall, this campus-wide midnight breakfast during the week before final exams features tons of homemade breakfast foood, baked goods, and other treats generously donated from Morningside vendors. It’s a great way for the Columbia community to get to know Theta and take a quick study break before a super-stressful week. The breakfast is served buffet-style, and all the money raised from a one-time entry fee is donated straight to C.A.S.A.
